The initial courses in this IMS 15 curriculum focus on the purpose of IMS and how it is used. It describes IMS database and transaction components and other components that comprise the IMS system. Later modules describe how IMS commands are invoked and the interpretation of results as well as the process and commands used to start and stop IMS. A description of the methods used to create database definitions and the actual allocation of IMS databases is also provided. IMS database backup and recovery strategies are presented as well as general performance-related tasks that an IMS Administrator needs to perform. For Application Programmers, details on the code used to build an IMS program are discussed along with how it is prepared for execution. Examples are provided in several programming languages: COBOL, PL/I, C/C++, and Pascal.
